Petrochemical industry plays
a significant role in Iran's economy. In line with the Government's Third
Economic Development Plan several world-scale petrochemical facilities will be
constructed in Pars Special Economic/Energy Zone at Assaluyeh. $15 billion to
$18 billion worth of investment will be made in the petrochemical industry in
the course of the 4th Five-Year Economic Development Plan (2005-10), said
Managing Director of National Petrochemical Company (NPC) Mr. Mohammad-Reza
Nematzadeh. Mr. Nematzadeh told reporters on the sidelines of the 4th
International Iran Plast Exhibition that $10 billion to $12 billion out of the
sum will be invested in Assaluyeh region.

Pars Special Economic/ Energy Zone :
In 1998, Pars Special
Economic / Energy Zone was established on a cabinet authorization to utilize the
gas from the South Pars field in a bid to develop the oil, gas, petrochemical
and their related downstream industries. Covering an area of 10,000 hectares,
the Zone lies on east of Bushehr province. It is 100 km away from the offshore
South Pars gas field.
Its temperature ranges between 5-50 degrees centigrade in the course of the
year. The average humidity ranges between 59-88 percent. Average annual
precipitation is about 180 milliliters. South Pars is the world's largest
independent gas field. It is located on the Iran-Qatar joint offshore borderline
in the Persian Gulf. the field has an area of 3700 sq km. home to 14 million
cubic meters natural gas and 18 billion barrels of condensates, the field
accounts 8% of the world and 50% of Iran's total gas reserves (about 13,130
trillion cubic meters).
With regard to the vast area of this gas field, so far, 14 development phases
have been formulated. Given its total reserves, the development phases can
increase to 28 or even more to further develop and expand the field. Currently,
a workforce of 25,000 people is directly engaged in the development of the
field. The figure is expected to exceed 60,000 in the near future as activities
gain momentum.
