LDPE producers in Asia seek price increases - Mar 4, 2011 [08:30]
LDPE prices this week were assessed mostly flat across Asia. Sellers were unable to hike their offers despite bullish input costs as regional demand trends remained slow.
CFR Far East Asia prices of general purpose LDPE were assessed at the USD 1700/mt levels while CFR South East Asia prices were assessed at the USD 1730/mt levels. Offers were higher at above the USD 1750/mt CFR levels, however buyer resistance at these price levels was strong.
An individual working for an LDPE producer when contacted said while requesting anonymity, “ we are determined to hike our LDPE offer rates owing to strong global energy prices, firm naphtha rates, rising prices of ethylene feedstock, tight product availability and the start of the turnaround season in Asia which will further render supplies tight. However, we are facing an obstacle in that demand at the current time is not strong.”
He added, “ nevertheless, we are of the opinion that post lunar holiday production rates at Chinese factories which are slowly but surely being ramped up will help demand for LDPE lift in the days ahead. Given that Chinese inventories of LDPE are not high and Asian supply limited, we expect the pricing undertone to steadily improve and support us in our efforts to increase our rates.”
Meanwhile in China, local prices of LDPE were assessed at the Yuan 13450/mt ex works levels this week.
LDPE prices record steep gains in Asia - Jan 22nd, 2010 [14:15]
LDPE prices this week raced higher in Asia. Prices firmed in tandem with gains recorded in upstream ethylene rates on the one hand coupled with strong buying interest in select parts of Asia on the other. Also supporting firmer LDPE numbers was tight availability of product across the region.
CFR Far East Asia and CFR South East Asia prices of general purpose LDPE were assessed up on Thursday at the USD 1600/mt to USD 1605/mt levels, a week on week gain of more than USD 70/mt.
A polymerupdate source in China meanwhile said that Sinopec Qilu restarted its LDPE plant located in Zibo.
The source said, " the LDPE plant has an annual production capacity of 140,000 mt/annum. Currently, Sinopec Qilu is believed to be building on its inventories and it will be a fortnight before its LDPE reaches the spot markets. In China meanwhile, buying activity has slowed as local players are concerned about falling global energy prices. Also curbing purchase interest are measures adopted by the government to curb credit."
Sinopec Corp is reported to have revised lower its ex factory prices in East China by Yuan 200/mt to Yuan 13,500/mt this week.

LDPE prices in Europe journey northward - Mar 7, 2011 [13:28]
LDPE prices firmed in Europe last week. Strength in global energy rates, firmer prices of naphtha, tight product availability and above all, a higher March contract price settlement in ethylene supported the gains recorded in both LDPE spot and contract prices.
In the spot markets, general purpose LDPE prices were assessed up at the Euro 1480/mt levels with offers pegged higher at above the Euro 1500/mt mark. In the contract markets, LDPE prices were assessed up at the Euro 1600/mt FD North West Europe levels.
For March, producers like Dow and Ineos announced hikes of Euro 80/m tint heir LDPE contracts while SABIC announced an increase of Euro 60/mt. With ethylene settling at Euro 1195/mt levels, up Euro 60/mt from February, these producers felt justified in seeking the targeted price hikes.
European source comments in March LDPE supplies of Sabic Europe - Mar 2nd, 2010 [08:05]
An industry source based in Europe informed a polymerupdate team member that Sabic Europe will not be accepting additional request for LDPE cargoes for March delivery.
The source said, “the company has had very low inventory levels in February as a result of which it has been able to meet only 70 percent of volume requests. Demand has been healthy, but production issues have been reported at the company’s plants since the end of January.”
The source added, “the company operates three LDPE units at Geleen, the Netherlands with a combined nameplate capacity of 425,000 mt/year. Out of these, two units were down towards the end of January due to production issues. It could not be ascertained whether the issues have been resolved.”

LDPE prices in the US climb - Mar 8, 2011 [13:10]
LDPE prices firmed last week in the US markets. Tight product availability coupled with firmer ethylene feedstock rates, supported sellers in their efforts to revise their rates higher.
FAS Houston prices of LDPE were assessed up at the USD 1760/mt levels with offers at the start of the current week heard up at above the USD 1775/mt FAS mark.
For the month, producers of LDPE were heard targeting a total increase of 8 cents/lb with a further increase on the cards for April. With unrest in Libya showing no sings of slowing and with energy prices bolstering higher, near term outlook for LDPE remain bullish.
