Ethylene prices spike in Asia - Sep 27th, 2010 [11:45]
Ethylene prices bolstered higher in Asia. The price gains were attributed by regional market observers to robust buying interest from Taiwan.
An industry individual in conversation with a polymerupdate team member said, “ not only have recent plant outages tightened Asian availability of ethylene, but the soon to start shutdown of Formosa’s three steam crackers at Mailiao for a turnaround, will further constrain spot availability, especially in Taiwan. The situation has been exacerbated on account of limited ethylene avails from the Middle East.”
He added, “ a planned shutdown at CPC will also keep the buying momentum active in Taiwan while good MEG producer margins will further see demand robust and help ethylene sellers keep their offers firm.”
FOB Korea prices of ethylene were assessed up at the USD 1135/mt levels while CFR North East Asia prices were assessed up the USD 1145/mt levels. Steep gains were recorded in South East Asian ethylene rates as well with assessed prices at the USD 1050/mt levels.
