Propylene prices weaken in the US markets - Oct 6, 2009 [10:15 ]
Ethylene prices continued to dip in Asia. Prices last Friday tumbled, sliding over USD 20/mt on the day in both North East and South East Asia. CFR North East Asia prices were assessed down at the USD 780/mt levels while CFR South East Asia prices were assessed down at the USD 875/mt levels.
FOB Korea prices of ethylene were assessed at the USD 775/mt levels.
Sellers attributed the steep plunge to ample regional availability and low demand across Asia. Falling prices of downstream PE added to the bearish pressures, prompting would be buyers to maintain a safe distance from the markets.
With China on holiday, the buying pulse further weakened late week. China emerged as an exporter of ethylene as Chinese producers came forward with their offers in an effort to reduce inventories ahead of the holiday start.
When contacted this morning, an ethylene buyer in South East Asia said to a polymerupdate team member, “ we have ample availability of ethylene in our region at the current time. There have been a flood of shipments from the North East Asian region to South East Asia and this has pushed spot regional prices of ethylene lower. Also bearish for prices is the return of Iranian ethylene offers which have eased all concerns of shortages in the near term. We are in no hurry to purchase anymore ethylene and even when the need arises to purchase cargo, we have ample options available.”
Meanwhile, HDPE film prices were assessed down at the USD 1130/mt CFR Far East Asia levels, while LDPE prices were assessed down at the USD 1185/mt CFR Far East Asia levels. LLDPE prices were assessed at the USD 1150/mt CFR Far East Asia levels.
