Choosing the right lubricant for the plastics industry

Since the last few decades, the plastics industry in India has seen a significant growth in various sectors such as automotive, construction, electronics, etc. The industry has gained notable importance in different sphere of activity with an increasing per capita consumption. The plastics consumption in the Indian industry is expected to increase from about 12 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) as in 2016 to 20 MMTPA by 2020.

To cater to such increasing demands, the industry relies on inevitable propellants of support such as lubricants. Within the majority of plastic applications, hydraulic oils play a major role in producing plastic components as well as reducing unscheduled downtime and extend oil drain intervals. Hence, it is very important to choose the right lubricants in this sector.

Energy is an inherent part of modern life in terms of computing, whether it is agricultural or any commercial activity that the industry undertakes. Plastics play a very important role in modern day life, primarily because each individual is looking at upgrading their lifestyle and that requires energy. One of the key ingredients of energy is understanding supply and demand and the processing requirements that directly impacts consumption.

ExxonMobil, an integrated oil and gas company looks at these aspects very closely, which are going to be implemented in their outlook to 2040. Mr. Shankar Karnik, General Manager- Industrial at ExxonMobil said, “We at ExxonMobil look at various energy demands and supplies across economies and markets to understand the dynamics of energy usage. We associate ourselves with plastics equipment builders and users in the industry where we operate with equipment that have rotating components. These engineering components require lubrication, which is the main ingredient for machineries. Lubricants at ExxonMobil help in upgrading the usage and productivity of the industry.”

ExxonMobil has a team of technology professionals who work with the research and development of equipment builders that helps in delivery of products in extreme conditions in about more than 40 locations in the world. “ExxonMobil takes pride in delivering many lubricant solutions for the industry and advancing benefit to their customers. We work as partners with manufacturers to deliver sustainable solutions. With one technology, we focus on three aspects of sustainable business environment – productivity, environmental protection and reduced safety risks,” Mr. Karnik added.

In the lubricants market, India stands on the third position in the demand sector surpassing Russia and Japan. With the ‘Make in India’ initiative coming into play, India’s competition in the global arena has seen a significant growth. “India is delivering world-class solution to the customers. The GDP is growing at more than 6% and the projected growth rate is 7.5%. The current growth rate signifies that PM’s Make in India campaign will bring a robust business module in the plastics industry,” said Mr. Karnik.
