Ethylene prices plunge in Asia

This week, despite firmer upstream energy values, ethylene prices witnessed a sharp fall in Asia. Prices tumbled, on the back of plentiful product availability in the region, weaker demand trends and deals concluded at lower levels in the region.

CFR North East Asia ethylene prices were assessed lower at the USD 840-845/mt levels, a week on week plunge of USD 75/mt.

CFR South East Asia prices were assessed down at the USD 820-825/mt levels, a tumble of USD 65/mt from the previous week.

In plant news, Eneos Corporation, has restarted its cracker on February 1, 2021. The cracker was shut for maintenance on December 4, 2020, and continued to remain off-line owing to technical issues. Located at Kawasaki in Japan, the cracker has an ethylene capacity of 540,000 mt/year and a propylene capacity of 308,000 mt/year.

In other plant news, LG Chem brought on-stream its cracker in the second week of January 2021. The cracker was shut owing to fire reported at the site on November 5, 2020. The cracker is expected to remain shut until January 2021. Located at Yeosu in South Korea, the cracker has an ethylene capacity of 1.16 million mt/year and propylene capacity of 580,000 mt/year.
