Eastman~s Tennessee Operations Receives Energy Efficiency Award

Petrochemical industry | 23 Dec 2005 IST | Polymerupdate.com
KINGSPORT, Tenn., Dec. 21, 2005 - Eastman Chemical Company~s Tennessee Operations has been recognized by the American Chemistry Council (ACC) for implementing energy efficiency improvements at its Kingsport manufacturing facility.

Tennessee Operations Utilities Division received the Energy Efficiency Award for its power plant optimization project, which also warranted Exceptional Merit designation. The project included the development and installation of state-of-the-art monitoring equipment in the production portion of the site~s energy system that resulted in improved efficiency and reduced emissions.

"We~re continually seeking new and more environmentally friendly ways to make our products," said Jerry Repass, vice president and general manager, Tennessee Operations. "This is just one example of how we’re implementing cutting-edge technology in order to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions. I~m very proud of what our employees have been able to accomplish here."

Eastman manufacturing facilities in Batesville, Ark.; Columbia, S.C.; and Longview, Tex., also received energy awards. Eleven companies and a total of 31 activities were honored as part of ACC~s Energy Efficiency Continuous Improvement Program, an effort that encourages its members to improve energy efficiency and minimize energy-related environmental impacts, thus strengthening international competitiveness.

When presenting the awards, Charles Van Vlack, executive vice president of ACC, said the award program is part of ACC’s ongoing efforts to save energy, improve the environment and increase economic productivity. “It’s particularly fitting to present the awards at this time of year, the beginning of the heating season,” he added. “Natural gas prices are at all-time highs. Homeowners can expect their home heating bills to be at least 50 percent higher this winter. Experts agree that the most effective short-term response to high prices is to conserve energy and use natural gas more efficiently. Today’s winners offer proof positive that it pays to invest in efficiency and conservation measures.”

Eastman manufactures and markets chemicals, fibers and plastics worldwide. It provides key differentiated coatings, adhesives and specialty plastics products; is the world’s largest producer of PET polymers for packaging; and is a major supplier of cellulose acetate fibers. Founded in 1920 and headquartered in Kingsport, Tenn., Eastman is a FORTUNE 500 company with 2004 sales of $6.6 billion and approximately 12,000 employees.
