India’s plastics exports surge 8% in FY2024-25 amid global challenges

30 Apr 2025 17:34 IST

India’s plastics exports rose by an impressive 8 percent in the financial year 2024-25 (April-March), despite global headwinds and macroeconomic challenges that impacted global trade. This sustained performance underscores the sector’s rising global competitiveness, strong international demand, and expanding footprint across key markets, reinforcing India’s position as a leading global supplier of high-quality plastic products.

According to the premier industry body, the Plastics Export Promotion Council (PLEXCONCIL), India recorded a staggering 8 percent increase in exports, reaching US$ 12.5 billion in the financial year 2024-25 compared to US$ 11.5 billion in the previous year. Established on July 15, 1955, by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, PLEXCONCIL promotes plastics exports globally. India maintained an upward trajectory in plastics exports, driven primarily by strong performance across various sectors.

Key product categories witnessing phenomenal growth include plastic films & sheets, which registered a robust 15.9 percent rise in exports, increasing from US$ 1.75 billion to US$ 2.03 billion. Exports of FIBC, woven sacks, woven fabrics, and tarpaulins grew by 16 percent, reaching US$ 1.57 billion, up from US$ 1.36 billion. Floor coverings, leathercloth, and laminates also recorded a healthy 9.9 percent increase, totaling US$ 762 million compared to US$ 693 million in the previous fiscal year.

“India’s plastics export sector has demonstrated remarkable performance, growing by 8 percent to reach US$ 12.5 billion in 2024–25. This growth is a testament to our industry's innovation, adaptability, and strong global demand across diverse product categories and geographies,” said Vikram Bhadauria, Chairman of PLEXCONCIL.

Bilateral trade
Looking ahead, the Indian plastics industry remains optimistic about untapped opportunities in Africa, Latin America, and the CIS region, where growing industrial activity and infrastructure development are expected to drive demand for Indian plastic products. To further enhance global competitiveness and expand market access, the sector is advocating for the early conclusion of key international trade agreements.

These include a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) with the United States and Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with the United Kingdom and the European Union. These strategic partnerships are expected to significantly boost India’s export capabilities and open new avenues for growth.

“India’s plastics export portfolio remains well-diversified, with key markets including the United States, China, the United Arab Emirates, and Brazil. With expanding opportunities in emerging markets such as Africa, Latin America, and the CIS region, and with critical trade agreements on the horizon, we are confident in achieving our target of 12 percent export growth for 2025–26. The future of India’s plastics exports looks strong and globally competitive,” said Sribash Dasmohapatra, Executive Director of PLEXCONCIL.

With a foundation built on innovation, resilience, and an expanding international footprint, India’s plastics industry is well-positioned to achieve a projected 12% growth in exports for FY 2025–26. Supported by strategic trade agreements and rising global demand, the sector is poised to reinforce India’s role as a leading global hub for high-quality plastic products.

Export promotion
Since its inception, PLEXCONCIL has worked tirelessly to enhance India’s reputation as a reliable export partner. Through participation in international trade fairs, exhibitions, and buyer-seller meets, the Council has provided Indian manufacturers with a platform to access global markets. Strategic collaborations, policy advocacy, and consistent support for its members have been central to the Council’s mission.

“Over the past 70 years, PLEXCONCIL has been at the forefront of championing India’s plastics export industry, helping it evolve from humble beginnings into a global powerhouse. Through strategic initiatives, innovative policies, and a commitment to excellence, we have empowered over 3,000 exporters to reach markets worldwide. As we celebrate this remarkable legacy, we remain focused on fostering growth, driving sustainability, and adapting to new challenges, ensuring that India continues to be a trusted and competitive leader in the global plastics industry,” said Bhadauria.

Initiatives like Plexconnect 2024, India’s only export-focused plastics exhibition, have garnered international attention, with successful Reverse Buyer-Seller Meets fostering direct business interactions. PLEXCONCIL’s efforts in conducting market surveys, disseminating export statistics, and promoting the industry through public relation (PR) and digital platforms have ensured that Indian exporters remain well-informed and globally competitive. Furthermore, by actively participating in leading international plastics exhibitions, the Council provides a global stage for Indian exporters to showcase their capabilities and explore new business opportunities.
