Polypropylene (PP) prices rise in Asia amid bullish upstream costs and higher import offers

09 Sep 2026 14:00 IST
This week, Polypropylene (PP) prices in Asia moved higher across most assessed grades and regions, supported by firmer upstream costs, stronger PP futures on the Dalian Commodity Exchange, higher freight indications, and elevated import offers from overseas suppliers. However, resistance to higher price levels and cautious buying interest limited the upside, with several market participants delaying fresh purchases and adopting a wait-and-see approach.

An industry source in Asia, on condition of anonymity, informed a Polymerupdate team member, "The upward trend in PP prices appears to have been driven by a spike in upstream energy values, with Brent crude oil surging to $100/bbl amid escalating geopolitical tensions. The surge in crude prices raised upstream cost pressures, prompting producers to lift their PP offers to reflect higher production and replacement costs. Higher propylene costs, stronger Dalian futures, and increased import offers from overseas producers further supported the market. Chinese-origin cargoes were offered at significantly higher levels than those from other suppliers, prompting buyers to favor domestically sourced material offering more competitive netbacks. Despite stronger seller sentiment, resistance to higher price levels and cautious buying interest kept trading activity subdued, with most market participants adopting a wait-and-see approach.”
