Pertamina Group's synergy is strengthening the national petrochemical downstreaming industry. This is being realized through PT Polytama Propindo (Polytama), an affiliate of PT Pertamina (Persero), which is relying on propylene supplies from PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional Refinery Unit VI Balongan to produce value-added polypropylene for the domestic industry.
Muhammad Baron, Vice President of Corporate Communications at PT Pertamina (Persero), revealed that in addition to producing fuel, Pertamina's refineries also produce intermediate products, which are essential raw materials for the national petrochemical industry. This role aligns with Pertamina's efforts to increase the added value of energy resources and strengthen the resilience of the domestic industry.
"Pertamina's existence through Polytama is proof of Pertamina's role in encouraging downstream oil and gas," he explained.
Director of PT Polytama Propindo, Dwinanto Kurniawan, emphasized that Polytama is an integral part of the Pertamina Group ecosystem which is integrated from upstream to downstream.
"Polytama does not stand alone. We are part of a national industrial system that connects the upstream and downstream sectors, from refineries to manufacturing. This integration is a crucial foundation for the resilience of Indonesia's petrochemical industry," said Dwinanto.
Propylene raw materials are supplied from the Pertamina RU VI Balongan Refinery via a pipeline network approximately four kilometers long. The Balongan Refinery supplies an average of 250,000 tons per year. The raw materials are then processed using LyondellBasell's Spheripol technology to produce high-quality polypropylene products.
Polytama's polypropylene products are marketed in various grades to meet the needs of the packaging, household, healthcare, and retail sectors. Polypropylene is used by various industries to produce plastic products such as household appliances and plastic cutlery, fibers for yarn, and more.
Currently, Polytama's maximum production capacity reaches 300 thousand tons per year and is planned to increase to 600 thousand tons per year through the development of new facilities supported by raw material supplies from Pertamina refineries throughout Indonesia.
"The use of propylene from Pertamina's refinery plays a strategic role in reducing dependence on imported petrochemical raw materials and strengthening the resilience of the national petrochemical industry. This also enhances the added value of domestic resources," said Baron.
As a leading company in the energy transition sector, Pertamina is committed to supporting the 2060 Net Zero Emission target and continues to promote programs that have a direct impact on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). All of these efforts are in line with Pertamina's transformation, which is oriented towards governance, public services, business sustainability, and the environment, by implementing Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) principles across all Pertamina business lines and operations, in coordination
