PT Pertamina Patra Niaga (PPN) through the refineries it manages is getting more serious about developing Pertamina Sustainable Aviation Fuel (PertaminaSAF) products made from used cooking oil (UCO). After the Cilacap Refinery, VAT will replicate the PertaminaSAF production process at the Dumai Refinery and the Balongan Refinery.
"Pertamina is committed to continuing to increase PertaminaSAF production from existing refineries. We will replicate the success of the Cilacap Refinery at the Dumai Refinery and the Balongan Refinery," said Corporate Secretary of PPN, Roberth M.V. Dumatubun.
For this reason, Roberth explained, VAT ensures that the production process that will be carried out at the two refineries must meet the applicable rules and regulations.
"The Dumai Refinery and the Balongan Refinery have officially achieved international sustainability certification, namely the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) of the European Union (EU) and the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) as a Processing Refinery. This is an important achievement in the development of low-carbon energy and energy independence," said Roberth.
The acquisition of this certification is a strategic milestone in the preparation of PertaminaSAF bioavtur production made from UCO raw materials. With this certification, the two refineries have met global sustainability requirements which are mandatory aspects in the production and trade of SAF in the international market.
"With the addition of refineries that are able to produce PertaminaSAF bioavtur, it will certainly further increase our optimism in ensuring the roadmap for the use of SAF in Indonesia," said Roberth.
The development of the ecosystem and increasing PertaminaSAF's production capacity at existing refineries is part of the company's strategy to expand its low-carbon business portfolio, in addition to optimizing existing assets and businesses. This step is also in line with the government's program to encourage national energy independence and a mandatory plan to use SAF.
Roberth explained that a number of preparations have been made, ranging from the readiness of the refinery infrastructure, cooperation with several used cooking oil raw material supplier partners, the provision of product analysis equipment, the development and use of special catalysts, to the fulfillment of the entire ISCC EU and CORSIA sustainability certification process.
"With this achievement, currently the entire PertaminaSAF supply chain at VAT has received ISCC international sustainability certification, starting from the Refinery, namely the Dumai Refinery, the Cilacap Refinery, and the Balongan Refinery as a Processing Plant and Aviation as a SAF trader and distributor," explained Roberth.
Without this certification, continued Roberth, the bioavtur products produced cannot be categorized as SAF and are not recognized in the global sustainability scheme, so they cannot be accepted by airlines or international consumers.
"Details of ISCC certification that have been achieved can be seen on the ISCC website," said Roberth.
With several preparations currently underway and in the completion stage, the Dumai Refinery and Balongan Refinery are targeted to be ready to conduct a trial of processing UCO to become SAF certified in 2026.
