With an eye toward introducing green methanol, we envision supplying locations such as Singapore and East Asia.
Idemitsu Kosan Co.,Ltd. has commenced joint discussions with Consort Bunkers Pte Ltd, a company that operates a marine fuel supply and solutions business, to establish a methanol supply chain for marine fuel. The two companies aim to supply methanol procured by Idemitsu Kosan as marine fuel to shipping companies in locations where there is a demand for bunkering*1 such as Singapore and major ports in East Asia through Consort Bunkers.
In the shipping industry, under the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from international shipping by around 2050, the adoption of fuels with lower GHG emissions for ships as alternatives to heavy oil is gaining momentum. Methanol, which are easy to handle with existing infrastructure, is a promising alternative fuel. Among the different types, the introduction and spread of green methanol such as e-methanol*2 and biomethanol*3 , which are produced without using fossil fuels and have a low environmental impact, is expected. The introduction of dual-fuel vessels capable of using methanol and heavy oil as fuel is also progressing, and building a supply chain to prepare for future growth in the demand for methanol is being prioritized.
Idemitsu Kosan is working to establish a supply system for e-methanol and biomethanol, which can not only be used as it is as marine fuel, but can also serve as feedstock for jet fuel, gasoline, and chemical production, thereby contributing to decarbonization across multiple sectors. Through joint studies with Consort Bunkers with its extensive knowledge and experience in fuel bunkering in Singapore, one of the world’s leading bunkering ports, and major ports in East Asia, we aim to build a methanol supply chain for marine fuel, with a view to introducing green methanol in the future.
-Supplying fuel for use in ships.
-A liquid fuel produced by synthesizing green hydrogen, generated by electrolysis of water using electricity from renewable energy sources with CO₂ captured from the atmosphere or other sources.
-Methanol produced using biomass as feedstock.
