Toray Industries, Inc., announced that five employees jointly won The Chemical Society of Japan Award for Technical Development for 2025. This was for developing design and manufacturing processes for nano-multilayer films based on multi-layer optical interference.
Their breakthrough stemmed from efforts to integrate and refine several core technologies. These include polymer molecular design, which factors in flow properties and optical characteristics, and film optical design based on optical theory and simulation calculations. They also tapped high-precision equipment manufacturing capabilities through polymer flow analysis and precision metal machining and film stretching and forming process technology.
A light-reflecting nano-multilayered structure requires hundreds to thousands of polymer layers with different refractive indices, stacked at the nanometer level. Conventional industrial methods struggle to consistently reproduce layer thicknesses required for optical performance and uniform layering across large areas.
Toray drew on its advances to develop and commercialize PICASUS nano-multilayer films that employ light control technology to selectively reflect light from visible to near-infrared rays. The excellent moldability of its all-polymer composition supports practical use across decorative, display, and diverse other applications.
Advances in mobility electrification and autonomous driving technology are increasing demand for better in-vehicle comfort and highly visible, sophisticated information displays. Toray accordingly enhanced its nano-multilayer technology to innovate polymer materials with unique optical functions. One such offering is PICASUS IR, which draws on a proprietary optical design to deliver exceptional transparency and heat shielding. Another is PICASUS VT, which reflects light only from oblique angles, making it ideal for head-up displays. Toray is taking advantage of the excellent radio wave permeability of this sensor-friendly material to broaden its use in mobility applications.
