Teijin Limited’s New Gas Co-generation System Projected to Cut CO2 Emissions by 200,000 Tons Annually

22 Apr 2026

Teijin Limited, a Teijin Group company, announced today that it has commenced full-scale operation of a new in-house power generation facility at the North District of its Matsuyama plant in Ehime Prefecture. The high-efficiency cogeneration system, fueled by natural gas, simultaneously supplies electricity and heat by effectively recovering waste heat generated during power production. This process, also known as Combined Heat and Power (CHP), enables both substantial reductions in CO2 emissions estimated at 200,000 tons/year for the Matsuyama facility and improved energy resilience.

As part of its core management priorities, the Teijin Group has identified “mitigating and adapting to climate change” as a central pillar of its sustainability strategy, with a long term commitment to achieving net zero CO2 emissions (carbon neutrality) by fiscal 2050. Transforming the energy infrastructure at the Matsuyama Plant Teijin’s largest production site represents a critical step in reducing the Group’s overall environmental impact.

With an approximate power output of 30,000 kW, the newly commissioned facility ranks among Japan’s largest industrial gas cogeneration systems. Teijin’s investment, including upgrades to receiving and distribution infrastructure, totaled tens of billions of yen.

Previously, the Matsuyama plant’s power generation facilities used coal and petroleumbased fuels. However, aging equipment and the company’s emphasis on reducing environmental impacts highlighted the need for modernization. At full-scale operation, the Matsuyama Plant is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 200,000 tons annually, compared to fiscal 2018 levels. As a related accomplishment, Teijin has become the first Japanese chemical fiber manufacturer with in-house power generation capabilities to completely eliminate coal use.

The Teijin Group will continue expanding adoption of renewable energy, implementing additional energy-saving measures through enhanced use of operating data, and increasing its contributions to a sustainable society.

About the Teijin Group Teijin is a technology-driven global group with two core businesses: highperformance materials and healthcare solutions. Established in 1918 as Japan’s first rayon manufacturer, Teijin today comprises some 150 companies employing 20,000 people.
