Independent study by Procter & Gamble confirms PureCycle’s dissolution recycling process upgrades post-consumer curbside waste to A3 Leave-on Cosmetic Grade, the highest quality level in the CosPaTox framework
PureCycle Technologies, Inc, a U.S.-based company revolutionizing plastic recycling, announced the result of a landmark 2025 study conducted by scientists at The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) confirming that PureCycle’s dissolution recycling process dramatically reduces contaminants in post-consumer recycled (PCR) polypropylene. PureFive® resin achieved the highest possible safety rating under the internationally recognized CosPaTox assessment framework.
CosPaTox is a science-based methodology developed by a voluntary industry consortium to evaluate the safety and suitability of recycled plastic materials for use in consumer products. The framework applies rigorous toxicology science to assign quality ratings based on the detected levels of contaminants and the intended application of the recycled material.
The CosPaTox rating scale ranges from Category C, suitable for industrial or detergent packaging applications, to Category A, the highest designation, which confirms that material is safe for use in leave-on cosmetic products that come into direct and prolonged skin contact. Achieving a Category A rating is one of the most demanding quality benchmarks in the plastics recycling industry.
The study, conducted on PureCycle’s full-scale production facility in Ironton, Ohio, assessed five incoming lots of household waste polypropylene PCR feedstock against five finished lots of PureCycle PureFive® polypropylene resin. All analyses were performed in triplicate to ensure statistical reliability.

Originally developed by scientists at Procter & Gamble and subsequently licensed to PureCycle for commercialization, the dissolution recycling process represents a significant purification advantage over mechanical recycling methods. PureCycle’s approach selectively dissolves polypropylene and separates it from the additives, colors, odors and fillers found in plastic packaging.

PureCycle’s dissolution recycling process also maintains the polymer throughout purification, meaning the resulting PureFive® resin retains the structural and performance characteristics of virgin polypropylene. This allows brands and manufacturers to use PureCycle’s recycled resin in high-performance, safety-sensitive applications that would otherwise require virgin plastic. In addition to purity gains, the technology delivers measurably lower CO₂ emissions compared to new plastic production and diverts plastic from landfills, making PureCycle’s recycled polypropylene a clear winner for the environment.
