Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. has invested in ATOM-X Inc. through its Corporate Venture Capital Group. Idemitsu will evaluate how to develop the e-methanol technology developed by ATOM-X. The investment allows the companies to work together to accelerate the scale up and commercialization of e-methanol production process.
ATOM-X has developed a technology using a proprietary catalyst to produce cost competitive e-methanol, in a single production step, by directly electro-synthesizing water and CO2 under ambient temperature and pressure. Currently, production of e-methanol requires a complex process under high temperature and pressure conditions. E-methanol can be as marine fuel but also can produce jet fuel, gasoline and chemical feedstocks. A cost competitive e-methanol is a strategic part of Idemitsu’s strategy, and will be an important future energy source, contributing to decarbonization in many sectors. Idemitsu will investigate technical and commercial collaboration with ATOM-X and accelerate efforts toward the social implementation of e-methanol.
