UBE Maxell Co., Ltd: Regarding the expansion of lithium-ion battery separator equipment

05 Jun 2026

UBE Maxell Co., Ltd., a joint venture between UBE Corporation and Maxell Corporation, has decided to construct a new separator base film manufacturing facility at its Sakai Plant to meet the growing demand for lithium-ion batteries for automotive applications.

This new facility construction plan follows the separator raw material manufacturing facility at the Sakai Plant, which is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2026. The first phase of construction will begin in fiscal year 2026, with the second phase scheduled to begin in fiscal year 2029. These measures will increase Ube Maxell's separator raw material manufacturing capacity by approximately 50% compared to the current level.

With the global progress toward a decarbonized society, the electric vehicle (xEV) market is expanding in the medium to long term, and demand for separators, a key component of lithium-ion batteries (LiB), is expected to continue to grow.

Currently, while there are signs of some adjustment in the expansion of the electric vehicle (EV) market, automotive applications, mainly hybrid vehicles (HV), are performing strongly, and the underlying demand remains robust.

, in addition to the spread of renewable energy, demand for LiBs for energy storage systems (ESS) is expanding due to increased power demand from AI data centers and other sources, and the separator market is expected to grow in both automotive and non-automotive applications.

Ube Maxell's dry-process separators have a proven track record of being adopted in numerous automotive lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) due to their functionality and safety. Moving forward, we aim to expand our business by responding promptly to the growing demand for separators, increasing our capacity, and accelerating the development of applications in next-generation xEVs and non-automotive markets.
