Pertamina and Boeing Explore Opportunities to Develop Indonesia's SAF Ecosystem

09 Jul 2026

PT Pertamina and Boeing signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore the development of a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) ecosystem in Indonesia as part of efforts to support the decarbonization of the aviation sector and accelerate the energy transition towards Net Zero Emission (NZE).

In line with the Asta Cita vision of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, Indonesia continues to promote the development of SAF as a solution to reduce carbon emissions in the aviation sector while supporting the creation of a more sustainable aviation industry. According to the ASEAN 2050 SAF Outlook report, Indonesia ranks third in ASEAN with the largest potential SAF production surplus, projected to reach 2.2 million barrels per day by 2050.

Through this collaboration, Pertamina and Boeing will collaborate in exploring various aspects of the development of the SAF ecosystem in Indonesia, including identifying potential raw materials, developing technology, and supporting the development of policies needed to accelerate its implementation.

President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), Simon Aloysius Mantiri, said, "For Pertamina, this collaboration is not just about fuel development, but a long-term investment to build a national SAF industry ecosystem. With the potential of abundant domestic resources, Pertamina's processing capabilities, and Boeing's global expertise in the aviation sector, we are optimistic that this collaboration will accelerate the development of a competitive SAF industry, create added value for the national economy, while supporting the decarbonization of the aviation sector."

Boeing estimates that air passenger traffic in Southeast Asia will grow by an average of 7% annually, with a need for 4,885 new aircraft by 2044. Amid this growth, the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a crucial solution to reducing carbon emissions in the aviation sector. In its pure form (neat SAF), this fuel has the potential to reduce the carbon footprint of aviation by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel.

"Indonesia is strategically positioned to lead the development of sustainable aviation in Southeast Asia," said Indra Duivenvoorde, Managing Director of Boeing Indonesia.

"We welcome the collaboration with Pertamina on various SAF development initiatives, from identifying potential raw materials to supporting education and training programs to accelerate the development of the SAF ecosystem in Indonesia. This collaboration is expected to support a more sustainable future for the Indonesian aviation industry while contributing to national economic growth," said Indra.

As part of the development of the national SAF ecosystem, Pertamina has initiated various initiatives, ranging from the production and certification of Pertamina Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), the implementation of its use with Pelita Air, to the development of the Cilacap Biorefinery project by PT Pertamina Patra Niaga to produce SAF and Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) from Used Cooking Oil (UCO) and other sustainable waste-based raw materials.

As a leading company in the energy transition sector, Pertamina is committed to supporting the 2060 Net Zero Emission target and continues to promote programs that have a direct impact on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). All of these efforts are in line with Pertamina's transformation, which is oriented towards governance, public services, business sustainability, and the environment, by implementing Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) principles across all Pertamina business lines and operations.
