PT Pertamina Hulu Energi OSES officially began implementing Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery at the Rama Offshore Field in the Southeast Sumatra Working Area. This achievement was marked by the first polymer injection ceremony held at the RDTX Square Multipurpose Room in Jakarta.
The ceremony was attended by the Head of SKK Migas Djoko Siswanto, Commissioner of PT Pertamina Raden Adjeng Sondaryani, President Director of PT Pertamina Simon Aloysius Mantiri, Deputy President Director of PT Pertamina Oki Muraza, Commissioners of Pertamina Hulu Energi Nanang Untung and Nepos MT Pakpahan, President Director of Pertamina Hulu Energi Sunaryanto, Director of Development and Production of Pertamina Hulu Energi Rachmat Hidajat, General Manager of PHE OSES Antonius Dwi Arinto, and President Director of PT Elnusa Litta Indriya Ariesca.
Prior to entering the implementation phase, this project underwent a comprehensive series of studies and evaluations, including subsurface studies , laboratory analysis, engineering design and offshore operations , as well as economic and risk management studies. This polymer-based CEOR also underwent an assessment and review process involving EOR experts within SKK Migas and Pertamina, to ensure implementation readiness from a technical, operational, and safety perspective.
CEOR at Rama Field is not only an innovation oriented towards increasing production, but also a means of obtaining operational data, technical learning, and validation of technology performance as a basis for developing full-field CEOR implementation in the future.
In practice, polymer flooding technology is applied by injecting a polymer solution into the reservoir to increase sweep efficiency , so that oil that was previously difficult to produce can be pushed towards the production well more optimally. This method is one of the EOR technologies to increase the recovery factor in the advanced stages of oil fields that have entered the mature phase .
" Mature fields are not finished assets; they require innovation and new approaches, through Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery (CEOR), we are providing a new "therapy" for our reservoirs , extending their productive life, and proving that decades-old assets can still contribute significantly to national energy security," said Simon Aloysius Mantiri, President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero).
The polymer injection at the Rama Field symbolizes a transformation in thinking. National energy security is built not only by discovering new reserves, but by maximizing every asset through the application of innovation and technology.

"The initial polymer injection conducted by PHE OSES in the Rama Field is the first offshore CEOR innovation in Indonesia. This moment marks a significant milestone in the application of EOR technology to optimize oil production from offshore oil and gas fields that have entered the mature phase. We hope CEOR will be able to deliver good recovery factor results and impact the increase in national oil lifting ," said Djoko Siswanto, Head of SKK Migas.
PHE OSES targets the full benefits of this project to be realized by 2030. The successful implementation of CEOR is expected to be an important reference for the development of EOR technology and open up opportunities for the application of chemical EOR technology in other offshore fields in Indonesia, thereby supporting the increase in national oil and gas production while strengthening national energy security.
