Pertamina Promotes National Geothermal Expansion at IIGCE 2026

21 Aug 2026

PT Pertamina continues to strengthen its commitment to supporting the national energy transition through the development of clean energy, one of which is geothermal energy.

This commitment is realized through various strategic steps by the Pertamina Group in developing new projects, expanding exploration, and optimizing geothermal assets that are already operating.

The government has identified geothermal energy as a strategic energy source to strengthen national energy sovereignty. In his remarks at the 12th Indonesia International Geothermal Convention & Exhibition (IIGCE) 2026, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia stated that President Prabowo Subianto had asked the government to explore various alternative energy breakthroughs to reduce dependence on imported energy, particularly amid geopolitical uncertainty and global energy price dynamics.

President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero) Simon Aloysius Mantiri and his staff also attended the IIGCE 2026 activity as Pertamina's support in geothermal development which is part of Pertamina's strategy in running a sustainable energy business while maintaining a balance between energy security, energy affordability, and environmental sustainability.

"Pertamina continues to accelerate its transformation to a low-carbon energy business and is committed to expanding geothermal development to support national energy security," Simon explained in a written statement on August 20, 2026.

At the 2026 IIGCE, Pertamina, through PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE), signed several strategic agreements and received new geothermal exploration assignments from the government. These included the signing of two Letters of Intent (LoIs) between PT PLN (Persero) and a consortium of PGE and PT PLN Indonesia Power (PLN IP) for the development of the Ulubelu Bottoming Unit Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) and the Lahendong Bottoming Unit Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP).

PGE President Director Ahmad Yani said this step is part of an effort to optimize the potential of geothermal power plants that are already operating.

"We welcome the signing of this LOI with great optimism. The Ulubelu and Lahendong geothermal power plants have played a vital role in providing electricity in Lampung and North Sulawesi. PGE is confident that the additional units we are developing with PLN IP will provide a clean and reliable electricity supply to more households, driving sustainable economic growth. This is part of our commitment to providing energy that empowers communities," explained Ahmad Yani.

On the same occasion, PGE also received a Decree (SK) from the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources regarding the Assignment of Geothermal Preliminary Survey and Exploration (PSPE) in the Cubadak Panti area, Pasaman and West Pasaman Regencies, West Sumatra.

"This responsibility is part of PGE's commitment to continue supporting the 2060 Net Zero Emissions target and strengthening national energy security. With strong synergy between the government, businesses, and the community, PGE will fulfill this mandate to transform Cubadak Panti's geothermal potential into sustainable, value-added benefits for the community," added Achmad Yani.

As part of the 2026 IIGCE, Pertamina, through PGE, also launched a book titled "Safeguarding the Nation's Energy Future: 100 Years of Indonesian Geothermal Energy." Ahmad Yani symbolically presented the book to Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia as part of the commemoration of Indonesia's centenary geothermal journey.

The book examines the history of national geothermal development, beginning with the KMJ-3 well in Kamojang in 1926. The well consistently produced dry steam and became one of the early milestones in the development of Indonesia's geothermal industry. The book documents the long journey of the national geothermal industry, the dynamics of its development, and the potential for geothermal energy as a future energy source for Indonesia.

Through these various efforts, Pertamina Group's role in supporting the national energy transition and maintaining Indonesia's energy security is strengthened.
