LOTTE Chemical is taking proactive steps to preserve marine biodiversity and support carbon neutrality through its seagrass restoration initiative.

In partnership with the Korea National Park Service, LOTTE Chemical is implementing a seagrass restoration project in the Geumo-do area of Dadohaehaesang National Park in Yeosu, Jeollanam-do. The project aims to restore eelgrass meadows, which serve as important habitats for marine life and recognized blue carbon sinks, thereby supporting marine ecosystem recovery and enhancing biodiversity. LOTTE Chemical has committed to supporting the project over a three-year period beginning in 2025 as part of its ongoing efforts to promote ecosystem restoration and carbon reduction.

As part of the first phase of the project, which commenced in February 2026, approximately 20,000 eelgrass shoots were collected from waters surrounding Nohwa-do in Wando County, Jeollanam-do and successfully transplanted to areas around Geumo-do. Together with the Korea National Park Service, LOTTE Chemical plans to conduct continuous monitoring and post-restoration management to help restore marine habitats and strengthen the long-term sustainability of the marine ecosystem.

In addition, on September 18, approximately 20 employees of LOTTE Chemical and representatives of the Korea National Park Service participated in a joint marine clean-up activity in the Geumo-do area. Organized as part of the broader environmental protection program associated with the seagrass restoration project, the activity was designed to promote greater awareness of the importance of marine ecosystem conservation and encourage a culture of environmental stewardship. LOTTE Chemical also conducted its “Mobile Environmental Playground” educational program for children living in island communities in Yeosu, helping foster environmental awareness among future generations.

“Seagrass meadows are valuable marine ecosystem assets that play a critical role in enhancing biodiversity and expanding natural carbon sinks,” said a LOTTE Chemical representative. “We will continue to expand our social contribution activities through a range of environmental initiatives that support a more sustainable future.”
