PRESS RELEASE

Petrobras improves production and offers the market agroforestry system with lower carbon intensity

28 Oct 2026

Produced at the Duque de Caxias Refinery, Petrobras' Sustainable Aviation Fuel becomes an international benchmark in environmental performance.

Petrobras has reached a new milestone in the production of sustainable aviation fuel. In the first half of October, the Duque de Caxias Refinery (Reduc) , in Rio de Janeiro, obtained international recertification of the product , recognizing advances that have significantly reduced the carbon intensity of the SAF and reinforced the refinery's adherence to the highest global standards of sustainability, traceability, and governance.

The ISCC CORSIA ( Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation ) recertification audit confirmed a significant improvement in the environmental performance of the fuel. The process recognized improvements implemented in the management of hydrogen sources used in SAF production, making the refinery's operation even more aligned with the international certification methodology.

With the update, the contribution of hydrogen from the catalytic reforming of naphtha, a source with lower carbon intensity used in the production process, was taken into consideration. As a result, the carbon intensity of the hydrogen used in production was reduced by 29% . This improvement directly impacted the environmental performance of the fuel produced from corn oil (TCO) , providing a 23.8% reduction in the carbon intensity of the SAF .

SAF international standard
The result positions the SAF produced by Reduc among the most carbon-intensive sustainable aviation fuels available on the market. In addition to increasing its competitiveness with airlines, the product contributes to meeting international emissions reduction targets for the sector, the mandatory phase of which will begin in 2027, and to complying with the guidelines established by the Future Fuel Law in Brazil .

“The achievement of Reduc demonstrates that reducing emissions associated with SAF depends not only on the use of certified raw materials, but also on the continuous search for process solutions capable of reducing the carbon footprint of the inputs used in production,” says William França, Director of Industrial Processes and Products at Petrobras. “By improving its processes and strengthening its sustainability governance, Petrobras is advancing in building alternatives to meet future regulatory requirements and expand its participation in the renewable and low-carbon fuel markets,” he adds.

The expansion of SAF production is part of Petrobras' strategy to develop solutions focused on the energy transition . In addition to the production already certified at Reduc, the company is in the process of certifying the production of co-processed SAF at the Henrique Lage Refinery (Revap) , in São José dos Campos (SP).

Petrobras has already completed the implementation of fuel production at the Gabriel Passos Refinery (Regap) in Betim (MG), and is in the final phase of implementation at the Paulínia Refinery (Replan) in Paulínia (SP). Both units will undergo the certification process to meet the growing market demand for lower carbon-intensive fuels.
