PT Pertamina and the Toyota Group are strengthening their strategic partnership by extending the cooperation for another five years until 2030. This collaboration includes the development of low-carbon fuels, lubricants, hydrogen technology, and petrochemical products to support national energy security while accelerating the energy transition in Indonesia. This commitment was discussed at the 2026 Pertamina – Toyota Cooperation Annual Meeting, Surakarta.
Pertamina Deputy President Director Oki Muraza stated that the partnership with Toyota is part of an effort to support national priorities, particularly the Asta Cita agenda of strengthening energy security and accelerating the energy transition through innovation. He stated that geopolitical dynamics and changing global energy conditions make developing strategic collaborations increasingly important.
"These various achievements demonstrate the progress of our collaboration and reflect our shared commitment to translating technical expertise and innovation into tangible business outcomes," Oki said in remarks delivered online.
Pertamina's Senior Vice President of Technology Innovation & Implementation, Hana Timoti, explained that the collaboration with Toyota builds on each company's respective expertise. Pertamina plays a role in developing and supplying fuel, while Toyota contributes through automotive technology development and understanding the energy needs of the transportation sector.
According to Hana, both companies need to ensure that fuel development keeps pace with advances in vehicle technology. This way, Pertamina's fuel production can meet the future needs of both public and automotive vehicles.
"So, each has its own advantages regarding how fuel and fuel technology will evolve in the future, as well as how automotive technology will evolve. The hope is that both can work together and synergize to build a transportation ecosystem, especially land transportation," explained Hana.
The use of alternative energy was also a topic of discussion. However, according to Hana, this use requires building a mutually supportive ecosystem.
"One of the challenges in developing alternative energy is building an ecosystem that allows for widespread adoption and economic viability of the technology. Hydrogen-based vehicle technology, for example, has been developed, but its utilization still requires ready supply, infrastructure, and a business model that supports commercialization. Price is also a consideration, as fossil fuels are currently relatively cheaper," Hana added.
However, according to Hana, future energy development cannot simply consider price. Supply availability and the ability to meet domestic energy needs are also crucial factors. Cheaper fuels won't be a solution if supplies aren't readily available when needed. Therefore, utilizing domestic resources is a key consideration in strengthening Indonesia's energy security.
"For energy security, we will focus on resources that are available in Indonesia and can be produced domestically. Prices may still be high, but again, if it's expensive but available versus cheap but unavailable, that's also a consideration," he said.
Meanwhile, Keiji Kaita, President of Toyota Motor Corporation's CN Advanced Engineering Development Center, said that carbon-neutral fuels are not only important for reducing emissions, but also play a vital role in strengthening energy security.
He believes Indonesia has great potential to produce fuel independently, thus opening up more opportunities for research and technological development.
Through this collaboration, Pertamina and Toyota are striving to synergize fuel development and automotive technology. This effort is expected to provide more energy options, strengthen Indonesia's energy security, and support the future of transportation.
"I believe this meeting can be a significant milestone in our collaboration and contribution to Indonesian society, not only by supporting carbon neutrality, but also by strengthening fuel supply resilience, driving technological transformation, and improving the welfare of the Indonesian people," Kaita said in her virtual remarks.
In a separate location, Pertamina's VP of Corporate Communication, Muhammad Baron, stated that Pertamina's collaboration with various parties is Pertamina's strategy to continue strengthening national energy security.
"Amidst the dynamics of global energy, collaboration is key to building strong energy security. The synergy between Pertamina and Toyota is a strategic step to strengthen each other's strengths to support resilience and low-carbon energy in Indonesia," said Baron.
