The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP): International Day of Zero Waste

19 Mar 2026

The International Day of Zero Waste, observed every year on 30 March, highlights the urgent need to strengthen waste prevention and management and promote sustainable consumption and production patterns to address the global waste pollution crisis.

Facilitated by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the 2026 edition of Zero Waste Day focuses on food waste. Around the world, food is wasted at an alarming scale. In 2022 alone, about 1 billion tonnes of food nearly one-fifth of all food available to consumers was wasted, undermining food security while contributing up to 10 per cent of global greenhouse-gas emissions and, in particular, a major source of methane emissions. Tackling food waste is one of the most cost-effective climate solutions.

From 1 March to 5 April, governments, businesses, and civil society groups around the world are organizing events, workshops, repair cafés, clothing swaps, exhibitions and more.

UNEP is offering interested media:
-Interviews with UNEP experts on the scale, impacts and solutions to global food waste.
-An interview with Massimo Bottura, three-Michelin-starred chef, co-founder of Food for Soul, SDG Advocate and UNEP Goodwill Ambassador, on how chefs and communities are transforming surplus food into meals that restore dignity and reduce waste.
